I lost my job from a Close Work Permit, can I still stay in Canada?

Updated: Jan 31

Today I was discussing with my peer about the unfortunate encounter of one of his clients and exploring various possible solutions. I believe this may happen to anyone, so

it’s worth sharing it with everyone here.

This client, he obtained a close work Permit in February of this year (2023) and brought his family to work and live in Canada. The work permit lasts for two years until it expires in 2025. Unfortunately, after the client worked for more than seven months, the company's business encountered problems and the position needed to be reduced. As a result, the client's work agreement was terminated early than the agreed expiry. The client felt shock and helpless, not knowing what to do.

I collected all the background information and study the profile of it and finally, I did the following analysis and provided multiple solutions based on his wishes.

Client's wishes: Stay with family and work in Canada.

Analyzing existing issues: Although he can legally stay in Canada until the expiry of your work visa, that is, until February 2025. However, since this is a Close Work Permit, the client can only be employed by the original employer and work on his original visa, and CANNOT be employed by other employers.
The core of the problem is that the original employer has decided to cancel the position, so it is basically impossible for the customer to work in Canada. After in-depth study of the client's case, I suggested at least the following four options for him:

Option 1: Stay in Canada before the visa deadline and look for the similar work experience with other employers bearing Positive LMIA. If you are successfully hired, you will need to apply to change your original work visa. (Change conditions)
Option 2: Convert the current Close Work Permit to an Open Work Permit through the Bridging Open Work Permit. In this way, client can continue to stay in Canada to look for work without being restricted by a specific employer, and can be freely employed by any employer.
Option 3: Using the Spouse Open Work Permit, the client’s spouse applies for a study visa (Study Permit) in Inland, and the guest then applies for the Spouse Open Work Permit.
Option 4: The client applies for a Study Permit and applies for a Post Graduation Work Permit after completing the course.
Suggestions are made based on the customer's background and wishes and cannot be applied solely to other cases.
